To falling in love!

“Gum sum ho kyun?

Paas aao na”

Khushi looked up just in time to see her sister pretending to waltz into the room they shared, her face scrunched up even as she continued to sing.

“Roothe ho kyun?

Maan jao na” Tripti swayed and closed eyes as she twirled her way across the room.

Khushi rolled her eyes and then winced as the action made the skin on her bruised upper eye stretch painfully.

“Gumsum ho…Oh shit!” Tripti rushed to Khushi’s side, dropping her school bag on her side of the bed unceremoniously. “What the hell happened to your eye?”

Khushi winced, this time at the sudden shrillness of Tripti’s voice. It simply reminded her of just how much both of them could screech without meaning to. Not that Tripti cared, of course. Such propriety was all Khushi.

“It’s not that bad,” Khushi began as she pried her glasses away from her face and leaned back as Tripti leaned in to look closer into the bruise.

“Not that bad? I am surprised your glasses are intact. How did you manage to do this?” Tripti asked, her eyebrows narrowed and her hands squat on her hips in a manner that made her look uncannily like their mother.

“You look like Mom.” Khushi grinned at her sister and put her glasses back on. “I am jealous.”

Tripti shrugged her shoulders superiorly and walked back across to her side of the bed, plonking herself on it as forcefully as Khushi was used to.

“So, who punched you?” Tripti asked as she pulled her hair free of the pony it was held up in. Khushi watched in silent awe as her sister splendidly raven hair spilled all around her face. Tripti was incredibly pretty. It made her proud. It also made her never want to see a mirror.

“I walked into a door. Don’t ask.”

Tripti shook her head. “Di, what does it take to look where you are going? Or wait, this was before your audition na?”

This was the trouble with sisters. They knew you too well.

Khushi shrugged. “It was but I wasn’t nervous, if that’s what you mean. It was more Arjun’s fault than mine.”

Tripti flung her arms wide and fell back into her pillow. “Arjun Agarwal.” She closed her eyes dramatically. “Please tell me he is just as handsome as he was in Mumbai, Di. My future Jija-sa. I am so proud of you.”

Handsome? Khushi thought about her first reaction to Arjun Agarwal’s sudden appearance a month back. She had used the same word. It seemed like such a long time ago. Especially since the arrival of a certain AV-Sir on the scene. Handsome? Now that word didn’t belong to Arjun anymore, did it?

Killing her own smile quickly, she cleared her throat. “Kill the drama, kid. And just so you know, there is very little likelihood of a future Jija-sa. You better crush all the Hum Aapke Hain Kaun dreams.”

“Arjun had a younger brother if I remember correctly, Di. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is very possible. Except, I would immensely prefer Arjun to his weasel of a brother,” Tripti said with such matter of fact seriousness that Khushi couldn’t help chuckle. “Plus, Anuj Agarwal was younger than me. And shorter. Not fun.”

“Arjun isn’t all that taller either, you know?” Khushi pointed out and then shook her head. “I cannot believe we are having this conversation.” She said as she went back to the diary that she had open in front of her, a number of songs written and furiously crossed off as unsuitable for the purposes of the Aarohan audition. “Help me pick a song, Trip. You can drool over Arjun later.”

Tripti turned to lie on her left side and raised herself on her elbow. “So you didn’t sing today. Convenient.”

“Nothing convenient about the bruise, I assure you.” Khushi went on even as Tripti plucked her diary out of her lap and started pouring over her list.

Five unnaturally silent minutes later, Tripti shut the diary close with a decisive snap. “Di, we are not singing for Sa Re Ga Ma. Have you looked at these songs? BORING. Not to mention difficult. They will never let you sing such stuff at Aarohan anyway. That is supposed to be a FUN event. Remember FUN?”

“I can’t be singing Kisi disco mein jaayein, ok?” Khushi snapped. And then she was reminded of the girl who sang that sexy club number. And AV-Sir. Maybe Tripti did have a point. Raina beeti jaaye was not going to cut it. Plus, who was she kidding, she couldn’t pull off a Raina beeti jaaye even if she wanted.

“Why ever not?” Tripti asked. “Kisi disco mein jaayein is awesome. So much fun. In fact pick any Govinda song. Guaranteed hit. You don’t even have to technically sing well.”

Khushi rolled her eyes and winced again. “Thanks” She said drily.

Tripti grinned. “You sing well, Di. I didn’t mean that. But seriously, some of these songs,” She held up Khushi’s diary, “will earn you nothing but boo-ing.”

“This is just for the audition.” Khushi said defensively but by now, she knew that she needed to find something fun. “I can’t sing fun songs, Trip. Really. I mean,…”

“Come on, Kaveri Khushi Gupta.” Tripti sat up and straightened her back. “Of course you can. Didn’t you tell me that you were playing antakshari when you get “conned”” she air quoted and rolled her eyes at the word, “into participating? Ab antakshari mein Raina beeti jaaye toh nahi ga rahi thi na?”

“Antakshari mein I was singing Iss deewane ladke ko. I can’t possibly sing that song tomorrow.”

Tripti’s eyes lit up almost comically. “Of course. Iss deewane ladke ko…The only girl from FY Mechanical Engineering singing one of the few songs where the girl gets to flirt. It’s brilliant. It’s perfect. It’s the answer to all problems.” She finished with a flourish, her voice rising to a crescendo dramatically.

“Krishna Tripti Gupta, you have officially lost your mind.” Khushi said as she swung her legs down to the floor and quickly rose to make her way out of the room, ignoring Tripti who continued to extol the virtues of the song Khushi couldn’t even consider in her list of possibilities.

—————

“Genius! She’s a genius!” Arjun exclaimed the next day during lunch. His eyes shined, uncannily like Tripti’s in that moment. “I never knew Krishna was this much fun. Honestly I had her pegged as…”

Khushi looked at him in confusion. “Huh?”

Arjun stopped talking, his hands suspended mid-air. His eyes narrowed.  “Shit! Did I get her name wrong? That would be really embarrassing. I thought her name was Krishna. It was always funny – this thing about the two of you named as rivers. I promise you, some of our classmates even called you the Ganga-Yamuna geniuses…”

Khushi shook her head and held up her hand. “Wait. Stop. You got her name right. It’s just that no one ever calls her Krishna. So it took me by surprise.”

“Oh!” Arjun shrugged and then leaned in curiously. “No one calls you Kaveri. No one calls her Krishna. Why do you have those names then? I mean this is like Hey I am Arjun but you can call me Shah Rukh Khan. You know, naam toh suna hi…”

Khushi slapped her palm against her forehead and winced as her skin stung by the unnecessary force of her own action. “Stop, stop…Arjun really….”

“Shah Rukh Khan” Arjun interrupted with a chuckle.

Khushi stared at him in wonder even as a slip of a laugh bubbled through her lips. “Shah Rukh Khan? Really?”

Arjun threw his hands up in the air. “Who else! The man is gold with women. See even you think better of me because I like him.”

Khushi’s face flushed. Was she that transparent? And how did…

Arjun grinned. “I didn’t actually know you were a fan. But if it helps,” He leaned forward and mock-leered, wiggling his eyebrows and spreading his arms out in imitation of the man in question.

Khushi burst out laughing. “Were you always like this, Arjun? Why don’t I remember?”

Arjun shrugged again and leaned back in his chair, picking up his cup of tea and taking a slow slip as the teasing light in eyes flickered. “You…” He looked away and Khushi skipped a heart beat. What was that flash in his eyes?

But before she could dwell on it any longer, the moment snapped and laughter was back. “You didn’t have time to look up from your books and notice us common folk, Chashmish Gupta”

Khushi’s heart continued to beat hard, hammering against her chest. She couldn’t believe what her sub conscious was telling her. It couldn’t be true. Someone like Arjun – handsome, cheerful, adorably flirty, could have ever felt anything for her…she was fat, wore glasses thicker than bottles of soda the canteen sold by the dozen, cared most about studying and marks…She shook her head. No, it was her filminess playing tricks in her head. Arjun Agarwal couldn’t….

And neither could Arnav Varun, a small voice rang in her head, drowning out the chaos of the cafeteria.

Her choice of song was not going to make any difference. And maybe she needed to just stop thinking how AV-Sir was going to react to her singing and just sing. So what if Iss deewane ladke ko was a flirty song. This was the only way she was going to have fun. And she was going to have fun.

She looked up at Arjun, who was looking at her curiously. “So you think Iss deewane is a good idea?”

Arjun slapped the table hard with his palm, his face alight with a grin. “Of course. It is perfect. Just as bindass as a Mechanical Engineering girl’s choice of song should be. And I can speak out the dialogue in between. I can already hear the whistling. This is going to be a hit.”

Khushi’s nerve withered and died. “You will recite the shayari in the song? God, Arjun…No…Everyone already thinks…” She shook her head.

“What? That we are seeing each other?” Arjun asked with a smirk. “That such a bad thing?”

Khushi’s face flamed again. She cursed herself. Why couldn’t she be cool about all of this? She was eighteen years old, not twelve.  She needed to grow up. Pulling herself up, she looked into Arjun’s eyes. “It would be…but..” She shrugged. “Who cares what others think.”

Arjun grinned and held up his palm which Khushi slapped hers against. “That’s my girl.”

Khushi took a deep breath. It was done. The decision was made. Now…all she had to do was….sing…without fainting…Dammit…what had she gotten herself into?

————

The spurt of adrenaline lasted exactly thirty minutes. All it took was one look at AV-Sir, sitting in the audience, center aisle, his eyes trained on her and no one else and Khushi was a goner. The orchestra strained and danced in rhythm, preparing for her song of choice but Khushi heard nothing except the loud rancor of her own heartbeat. It was a wonder how she hadn’t yet suffered a stroke given how much exercise her heart got these days.

She turned slightly to look at Arjun who was intently studying the piece of paper in front of him.

“Arjun,” She whispered.

Arjun looked at her once before going back to his sheet. Khushi rolled her eyes. He was nervous. All he had to do was spout some silly shayari in the middle of her song and he was nervous? This was ridiculous. She wasn’t going to do it. Not with everyone looking at them like this. They were laughing. At their choice of song. At them standing together looking jumpy and full of nerves. Even AV-Sir. Surely that was laughter in his eyes. What was she thinking? She couldn’t do this.

“I can’t do this.” She whispered and lowered the mike in her hand. “I can’t sing that song, Arjun. No…I’ll just…I’ll just sing what I had come prepared for.”

Arjun looked at her, his eyes wide in shock. “Kavi, please…come on…I just told the guys,” he said pointing to the orchestra, who were thankfully still tuning themselves to an equal music.

“I don’t care. I am not singing Iss deewane ladke ko…What was I thinking? You get me into all these ridiculous situations and I…I stop thinking…” Khushi said urgently, keeping her eyes away from AV-Sir who was now leaning forward, almost as if he knew what was happening between Arjun and Khushi. Which was ridiculous. He was sitting a good twenty feet away from the stage.

Arjun’s face fell and Khushi felt a twinge of guilt. But Kaveri Khushi Gupta could testify in front of a grand jury in that moment that stage fright was destined to trump guilt any given day, any given moment.

“Are you sure…your song…it’s nice but it won’t get approved. They have this thing about everything being…”

“Yes, I know, everything needs to be fun. But I don’t care. I will sing what I sing. They can all go to hell. Hell, I didn’t want to sing in the first place.”

“God, Kavi, you are panicking.”

Khushi took a deep breath. She was panicking. She looked at Arjun again, this time taking a minute to gather her thoughts before speaking.

“I’m sorry. I know I am being a child but…”

Arjun held up his hand and shrugged. “It’s okay. Whatever you are comfortable with.” He stepped back from her and walked towards the orchestra.

As Khushi let the lyrics of the song of her original choice come rushing back to the fore, she heard Arjun and the orchestra team quickly exchange words about the change in plan. She couldn’t have asked for a better friend than Arjun in that moment because what could have been a rather embarrassing situation with her having to explain why she was changing songs at the last minute, was being handled rather too smoothly by him.

“Guys, what’s the problem? We need to get started on song selection and rehearsal. Can we please hurry up?”

The other final year member on the Aarohan team, Nishant-something yelled out from the right wing.

Khushi swallowed and looked back at the orchestra to check if they were ready.

Arjun nodded and stepped away from the stage to join Nishant Sir and the person on the keyboard Ravi-something nodded at Khushi. He held his thumb up in question and Khushi nodded. As he gave her the key, Khushi closed her eyes and lifted the mike and held it close to her mouth.

“Shhh,” someone yelled and all the noise in the auditorium died down to nothing. It was her stage now.

She took a deep breath and allowed the music to come to her.

“Dil ne kaha, chupke se

Yeh kya hua chupke se”

Her voice trembled slightly. But there was something powerful about the way her voice echoed in the large room. All her doubts and misgivings fell away as the keyboard took over and played the piece of music that lilted through the sound of a sitar and rose to a crescendo merging into the sound of a hundred violins and the echoes of morning mist across the Himalayas thrumming in the vibrations that she felt in her heart.

Kyun naye lag rahe hain ye dharti gagan

Maine poochha toh boli ye pagli pwvan

Pyaar hua, chupke se

Ye kya hua, chupke se

Her feet tapped, her free hand drummed against her thigh, her body radiated warmth that she knew came only from music.

Kyon naye lag rahe hain ye dharti gagan

Maine poochha to boli ye pagli pawan

Pyaar hua chupke se

Ye kya hua chupke se

Titliyon se suna

There was no audience in front of her anymore. She was seven, just as she was when she first heard this song. It had spoken to her even then, the gay abandon of a girl in love, the beauty of the mountains, the fire in her eyes, the soft shimmer of water around and the calls of a fight for freedom. She didn’t understand the movie, she didn’t even grasp the meaning of the words. But when did music ever have to be about that?

Titliyon se suna

Maine kissa baagh ka

Baagh mein thi ek kali

Sharmeeli anchhui

Ek din manchala bhanvra aa gaya

Her eyes flew open and found the deep coal ones she had been avoiding for so long. And suddenly words that had never meant anything more than a song that showcased her untrained talent, took a life of their own. Her mouth curved into a smile, a wisp of hair uncurled itself for her tightly held hair. A soft breeze found the skin of her cheek and it didn’t matter that none of this was real.

Khil uthi vo kali paaya roop naya

Poochhti thi kali ki mujhe kya hua

Phool hansa chupke se

Pyaar hua chupke se

There was laughter in her voice. It had never been easy for her to bring that small chuckle as she had sung this line in the past. And now it came so naturally, like it was meant to be here in this moment, years after she first heard the song, that it would come alive; like it was meant to be for him, for his benefit.

She smiled as took a second to rest her voice, allowing music to continue the journey.

And she saw it mirrored in twin pools of glittering admiration.

Maine baadal se kabhi

Ho maine baadal se kabhi

Ye kahaani thi suni

Parvaton ki ek nadi

Milne saagar se chali

In that moment, she was that river, the embodiment of her own name. And there was an ocean waiting for her. She would find out eventually that the line had sealed her fate in that moment not just as mirror of her name but his too.

Jhoomti ghoomti

Ho naachti dolti

Kho gayi apne saagar mein jaake nadi

Dekhle pyaar ki aisi jaadugari

Chaand khila chupke se

Pyaar hua chupke se

Kyon naye lag rahe hain ye dharti gagan

Maina poochha to boli ye pagli pawan

Pyaar hua chupke se

Ye kya hua chupke se

She allowed her voice to trail away as the keyboard and drums picked up pace and rounded up the song with a flourish. For a second, there was silence in the auditorium. Khushi felt herself breathing hard, like she had been running for the past four minutes. She waited in anticipation her teeth sinking into her lips as she lowered the mic and took a deep calming breath.

The applause that followed, mute as it was due to the limited strength of the audience was as unnerving as the rush of people around her. She could hear words of admiration, smiles and laughter – some curious, some surprised, others gladly pleased. Arjun was patting her on her back and telling whoever cared to listen just how right he was in his judgment of her ability.

But Khushi didn’t care.

All she sought was his approval and amidst all the chaos, she had no chance to see what she really wanted to. She could crane her neck, she could excuse herself and walk up to him. And yet her feet were frozen. The song had awoken something deeper than she had expected of herself. The strength of her own feeling surprised her. It wasn’t possible. Such things were limited to channels of art – films, books, poetry. Life was supposed to be different. And yet, for once, she didn’t want the sane side of her to win. She wanted to believe flimsy net of gold that had spun itself around her.

“Kavi, that was mindblowing, really. It almost felt like it was….”

Khushi looked up at Arjun as the others peeled away, allowing her the glimpse of the audience in front of her. The seat was empty. Her eyes scanned the gallery, the rows of empty seats, the small group of students at the right most corner, the door that remained slightly ajar to the bright afternoon sun. Nothing.

“You sounded inspired! Yes! That’s the word…Beautiful.” Arjun said enthusiastically, cutting into the urgency of her visual search like a screeching note in perfectly rendered symphony.

And yet, it was Arjun she owed this moment of self-discovery to. So Khushi forced herself to smile at friend, ignoring the fact that it felt mechanical. She shook her head to dismiss his praise and dragged her eyes back to the house in front of her.

AV-Sir was gone.

    1. Oh! You brought that tension to its very peak and left us hanging YET AGAIN.

Here are my two favorite lines in this update today.. “This was the trouble with sisters. They knew you too well.” I guess I know a variation of this as I have no sisters…I do have a few of those and yes, they do know me more than I know myself sometimes.

Here is the second one.. along with Khushi’s heart, mine went for a small dive as well.. “Arjun shrugged again and leaned back in his chair, picking up his cup of tea and taking a slow slip as the teasing light in eyes flickered. “You…” He looked away and …” Right here is your mastery at story telling. You bring these magical moments to those in your story who aren’t protagonists. I can see how much you like your Arjun (just like how much you adored your Amans :)) – I see it in the way you are carving him for us, your readers.

I realize that you are revealing your story layer by layer. I love that you pay such close attention to your characters. I love that your story is not *just* about Arnav and Khushi. That it is about Arjun, it is about Krishna… and all those lovely characters you create that I simply cannot help but fall in love with.

Meera30… I went back to say hi to your The Emerald Isle Tales… and I want to say that your magic is in the stories you weave… So.. thank you for creating one more and thank you for sharing.

  3. Wow, thanks for this spectacular update. It’s such a delightful chapter. Tripti is definitely a filmy yet cute sister; she has already labelled Arjun as her BIL. I believe that Arjun may like Khushi and she may have returned his feelings, if Arnav never entered the picture. I’m happy that Khushi sang a song that was close to her heart. Her love for Arnav gave her more strength to sing this song to its full capacity. I hope that Arnav realizes Khushi likes him instead of believing that she is with Arjun.

Every part of it was amazing. Loved the song. So they both felt it. Thats why he ran out?
And this time Khushi is ready to face her feelings? Beautiful!
Cannot wait for another 10 days 😤

  5. In the meanwhile there is a woman somewhere in Central Jersey ruining this song while loading her dishwasher.

Sigh. I can never get enough of the songs from 1942, A Love Story. I went to Youtube to listen to Pyar Hua Chupke Se and marveled at how beautiful Manisha Koirala looked in the movie. She still does. She, that yellow dupatta, the lyrics and Kavita Krishnamoorthy’s voice. It’s a pity they dont make songs like these in Hindi cinema anymore.

And, I dont know about anyone else…. but I am just going to stick with Kavi/Kaveri. I cannot call our girl Khushi now. Especially after reading this – “”In that moment, she was that river, the embodiment of her own name. And there was an ocean waiting for her”.

Also…… I am more curious about Arjun’s role in this story. Will have to be patient to find that out.

  6. Oh Meera, your love and knowledge of Bollywood romantic songs simply amaze me! I thoroughly enjoyed Kaveri Kushi’s discovery of love, connecting with the lyrical notes in this romantic song and letting it surge through her so that there was nothing but a girl happily singing of how she fell in love. The fact that the object of her desire was in front of her was surely an inspiration but a scary inspiration nevertheless. Somehow, he must have felt it too I am sure of it. Why else was his seat empty and the door ajar? When you connect without having a direct conversation, it is very deep indeed. So did she confuse him or enlighten him? You had me hanging on there, waiting like Kushi for the crowd to disperse to search for the only feedback that matters, to see if there was reciprocation in those eyes. But there was no AV sir and I am left wanting for more . . .what am I to do for 10 days Meeraji? All kind of ideas will fill my silly head till I read his reactions.

I am not ignoring your Arjun here because I kinda feel for him as I think he has a little something for Kaveri and followed her to the same uni. Kushi is definitely flattered but unfortunately for Arjun, av sir made his presence already felt in her life before she can think harder about him. Arjun will go on though as he is one of those happy go lucky kind of guy that will bring a smile to any girls he meets. As for Tripti, well I have a few of those – some separated by oceans but boy do they know when I need that sisterly shoulders. Sisters will be sisters and nothing can ever break that bond.

Hope AD calm down soon for you. I am learning to delegate and use all the resources at my disposable. It is hard to do when you are a control freak but it sure helps lighten the load. Take care Meera.

    1. OH.EM.GEE!!
The update had me literally stunned for a few seconds! What an amazing update..and worth waiting for.
I totally blushed throughout the update..as I used to while watching IPK..
      “Parvaton ki ik nadi
      Milne sagar se chali..”

It was as if this line was made for this story!! How do u do these things Meera? Such perfect syncing and harmony??! Im in awe.

Is it possible..in the far future..for something to happen between Arjun and Tripti? Arjun is in love with Khushi now..but maybe later..hmm? ;)
Khushi has realized -even if its a tiny bit about Arjun’s feelings.

AV sir definitely liked ur song Khushi..maybe a little too much?? **wink wink nudge nudge** :D He’ll praise u personally later I’m sure..waiting for it with bated breath I am :P
I’m glad Khushi sang this song ultimately..I approve! :)

Lovely update..will wait for the next one as long as needed, never worry Meera.

      1. WOWW! This was an amazing update. It held me enthralled throughout. I’m glad Khushi sang this song…because even though it isn’t “fun”, it’s playful and powerful and conveyed Khushi’s own feelings so well.
Where has AV Sir gone?? Did he feel it too? That intense flow of feelings through words and music?
Arjun is a dear. And he..has feelings for Khushi..aww poor you..Khushi to sirf Arnav k liye hi bani hai ;) :p

Lastly, I want to say I absolutely love the songs (and esp the lines) you choose at the end of every chapter.

Does Arjun like Khushi?btw do I see a future between Tripti and Arjun?

  8. Meera, What can I even say….you have left a writer…and I always pride myself on being a decent one in Asli Duniya, quite speechless today. Using that magical song from 1942 A Love Story was such a stroke of genius. It is the most amazing number, and if one were to link this story to any one definitive song in Hindi films, this would be it. Superb narrative about how Kaveri Khushi Gupta gets so lost in her meandering journey to reach Arnav Varun….yes, undoubtedly Cupid has struck them both….his eye lock with her while she was singing, and his disappearance after are clear indications that he was as touched by the whole lyrics to life connect as she was….cannot wait to see how they go forward with this one…and more importantly, why she was still running away from him in the present….

Meera, do rush and update…10 days…I will have to keep playing kyun name lag rahe….on you tube repeat mode and imagining Arnav and Khushi there to live through this time.

    Love it!

  9. Aww Meera! Such a beautiful, romantic song for Khushi to sing! That song is one of the best of RDB. My favourite. And I just realised that the meaning held in this song, especially the second stanza, is somewhat reflected in the poem you left for us when you posted the first teaser for this story. Oh boy! Can’t wait to see if Arnav was also as affected as Khushi. My guess is yes, but you are the master, so I’ll wait for you to spin your magic.

  10. Your writing is so refreshing Meera … you write about those youthful college days so beautifully that it feels as though we are living them once again … sigh …
Sisters know you too well … so Tripti is dreaming of Arjun as her future Jija … little does she know that there are deep charcoal eyes that have begun to haunt our Kaveri lately …
The song selection was absolutely beautiful … went with her state of mind completely and I think that she conveyed all that was going on in her mind to that someone special … but I’m left wondering why he disappeared … will wait for you to tell us soon …
Thank you Meera … waiting eagerly for the next one …

  13. I didn’t have to hear “Pyar Hua” again to visualize this. Just by the description you gave about the waterfall of sounds that follows the first quartet of the song, I could hear it clearly in my mind. It is hard to pick a favorite song from this movie.

You know what captured my attention the most in this update? These lines:
“There was no audience in front of her anymore. She was seven, just as she was when she first heard this song. It had spoken to her even then, the gay abandon of a girl in love, the beauty of the mountains, the fire in her eyes, the soft shimmer of water around and the calls of a fight for freedom.”
Took me straight back to a vacation to Kerala-Delhi-Agra-Manali I took with my family and another family. My sibling and the other kids were much younger than me, so I spend my time on the Rajdhani express listening to songs from Sapne (mostly Awaara Bhanware on repeat) on my walkman, looking out of the window in my own curtained world on the side berth, watching the beautiful scenery go by. sigh! such simpler times! :)

  14. Meera Darling,
O falling in love!—- That’s exactly what happens each time I read your work…oh woman! What have you done to me? I got up at 4.30am to check my mail – to see whether you updated notification…and there it was!! Oh what a lovely morning it was! You make me yearn to fall in love Meera…When you explain these dhak dhaks through your characters, its irresistible…sigh! You weave all kinds of romance in a story..subtle, powerful, playful, serious…..you dunno what you are doing to readers like me…
Coming to the update…. Lovely title – Cold feet, Warm heart…accurate symptom of love..
Krishna & Arjun has become my most favourite people in this story than Arnav and Kaveri…seriously..there two are the masti and always on dot..…I want to see them together..its too early to ask…I know…but sigh!
Krishna straightaway understood Khushi’s tension. Krishna is excellent as a sister and Arjun a blessing in the form of a friend. Both always eases Khushi’s tension and fears, unconditionally supports her and motivates her..makes her laugh…Khushi is indeed blessed to have these two in her life….
The sister’s banter was lovely and realistic…I loved certain scenes
    1. It simply reminded her of just how much both of them could screech without meaning to. Not that Tripti cared, of course. Such propriety was all Khushi.—- I agree, elder siblings (majority) are too overly concerned in propriety but secretly they wish to break all the rules.
    2. “So, who punched you?” Tripti asked as she pulled her hair free of the pony it was held up in. Khushi watched in silent awe as her sister splendidly raven hair spilled all around her face. Tripti was incredibly pretty. It made her proud. It also made her never want to see a mirror. (Oh god! I know this feeling, but I do look at the mirror and pout at myself..)
    3. This was the trouble with sisters. They knew you too well.—— I always wondered why elder sisters aren’t so blessed in sensing these kind of things than younger ones…Of course in certain matters elder siblings antenna is finely tuned but it’s the younger ones who often point out the matters very candidly and in a smartly phrased way that makes the elder ones wonder
    4. Well I am not that surprised about Krishna feeling Arjun as future jija sa…I loved her drama and the way she said “Arjun Agarwal.” Tripti flung her arms wide and fell back into her pillow. “Arjun Agarwal.”
    5. Handsome? Now that word didn’t belong to Arjun anymore, did it?— this is what I don’t like…ok it happens…when you see a more handsome guy, your attention goes naturally to the more handsome one…I am partial towards Arjun that’s why..
    6. “So you didn’t sing today. Convenient.”—Aha! I can hear Krishna’s tone very well in my ear especially that “convenient, sisters have a knack to make us feel like a coward…
Honestly I regret not learning Hindi properly when you mention certain songs…at times I understand when I read the lines if the words are simple but at times its tough to connect. Can you mention the movie names of these songs too Meera?
What I loved most in this update is Krishna speaking about Arjun and Arjun speaking about Krishna…I feel there is a connection between Arjun & Krishna…of course there will be…nice coincidence of names….

Hey I am Arjun but you can call me Shah Rukh Khan. You know, naam toh suna hi…”I loved this part – can see Arjun doing the perfect imitation of King Khan….Can we have faces for Krishna and Arjun Meera???
The man is gold with women. See even you think better of me because I like him.”— That’s true…just today I saw him in IPL KKR’s pictures with AbRam…it was cute to see the baby and Papa together…Both looking so adorable!!

“Were you always like this, Arjun? Why don’t I remember?”— I loved this natural question from Khushi….there are certain moments in your associations when you feel like how come you missed such a charming side of your friend….Arjun’s response increased my curiosity…I always wanted to know Arjun’s thoughts and AV’s perspective….when will I get lucky?
He looked away and Khushi skipped a heart beat. What was that flash in his eyes?—Now this is what I call as female gut instincts…Khushi noticed something even though not sure…oh ho!!! I cant wait…Anyways I loved how Arjun moved the topic to safer grounds…
Arjun Agarwal couldn’t….—Now this is called self-depreciating…again I can connect with Khushi’s natural insecurities and her doubts…Have been there…I dunno whether I am still there or improved…
Khushi’s nerve withered and died. “You will recite the shayari in the song? God, Arjun…No…Everyone already thinks…” She shook her head.—aha! There it is!
“What? That we are seeing each other?” Arjun asked with a smirk. “That such a bad thing?”—- I wanted to know his tone or expression when he delivered this dialogue…and khushi’s answer didn’t sound convincing for me…she does care what others think…
The decision was made. Now…all she had to do was….sing…without fainting…Dammit…what had she gotten herself into?…LOL
    ————
The spurt of adrenaline lasted exactly thirty minutes. All it took was one look at AV-Sir, sitting in the audience, center aisle, his eyes trained on her and no one else and Khushi was a goner. —LOL!! Poor girl! Crush or love can be a dangerous thing..the way it makes you nervous!! Makes you do foolish things!! He he…
It was a wonder how she hadn’t yet suffered a stroke given how much exercise her heart got these days. Ha ha!!
But Kaveri Khushi Gupta could testify in front of a grand jury in that moment that stage fright was destined to trump guilt any given day, any given moment.—- I loved this statement and I second it completely…
Oh man! Arjun-Kaveri whispering on the stage regarding the song was adorable…and Man, I tripped and fell for this Arjun….how smoothly he soothed her and gave her the much needed support…And the song’s opening which you wrote gave me goosebumps…and when their eyes met it had an impact…

And now it came so naturally, like it was meant to be here in this moment, years after she first heard the song, that it would come alive; like it was meant to be for him, for his benefit.—Oh Meera!!!!!!
    Parvaton ki ek nadi
    Milne saagar se chali
In that moment, she was that river, the embodiment of her own name. And there was an ocean waiting for her. She would find out eventually that the line had sealed her fate in that moment not just as mirror of her name but his too.—- My my!! This is absolute brilliance ! Meera! What a wonderful linkage!
All she sought was his approval and amidst all the chaos, she had no chance to see what she really wanted to. Awwwwwwwwwww!!!
Life was supposed to be different. And yet, for once, she didn’t want the sane side of her to win. She wanted to believe flimsy net of gold that had spun itself around her.—- sweet!!!
And yet, it was Arjun she owed this moment of self-discovery to. —True! Khushi should buy samosas for Arjun as treat…he he…But where did AV go???
10 days??? Oh Meera! Work is important…you take care, dont stress yourself!

  17. What a choice of song! If I had to define perfect, I’d cite this as an example… Parvaton ki ek nadi, milne saagar se chali Just – PERFECT. Oh Meera!

You know – the writing was spectacular, but I think it may have had the opposite effect on me. Now I almost wish I never fall this deeply in love – it might be liberating but it must also make one feel so helpless and anxious! Their heart will cease to ever be at peace unless they unite with their beloved. Sigh… I don’t know if thats a place one wants to be in…

Now wait – WHERE IS AV SIR? She literally sang for him and he just vanished! And now I have to wait 10 days to find out where.

The whole Khushi singing + epiphany + realisation + acceptance + full throated expression scene was stunning. WordPress isn’t the place for you Meera. This should be published. Such finesse – it would be a shame if a larger audience didn’t get to read it.

Now – Arjun. I now know its possible to love two people at a time. Because I love both Arjun and Arnav. They are both mine. Bas. I have a tendency to root for the underdog – so I am rooting for both Khushi and Arjun. How will that ever work ? Let me just say that Arjun was incredibly sexy and loveable in this update :D

Now, my song for this update:

  21. This was amazing.
Relation between two sister and their close connection is shown so beautifully. That’s true that they knew you so well and you can’t hide your self infront of them. It was so sweet that tripti think of staying together after marriage and for that she is ready to marry Arjun’s brother too.
So Arjun is attracted towards Khushi or it’s too early to say.
The song Khushi choose is my favourite too. You captured this part so beautifully. Loved how she was looking towards arnav for his approval and any reaction from him. But he was not there how sad was that.
I am too waiting for his POV for Khushi.
    Thanks for marvellous update.

Meera, I’m really enjoying this story. You can’t imagine how impatiently I wait for updates. Loving the college romance, the constant banter, the lovely songs. The ones you posted today are among my favourites. Khushi did choose well. Its a loveky song and one could well imagine her singing it. But why did Arnav go away? Waiting for his reaction to her singing.

Wonder why Arnav ran away or did he realize that khushi has a special place in her heart for him. Also, Arjun liking khushi was interesting. Wonder if he still likes her. Looking forward to the next update, when you get a chance. No worries if you are not abl to update. Update when you get the chance. :) – ship13(IF)

Reading the update today I forgot this is fiction and its Khushi not me. You walked us through her emotions so well that it was hard not to get emotionally involved. When Khushi’s eyes opened in that moment to look into AV-Sir’s I swear my heart skipped a beat. By the time she finished I was anticipating his reaction as much as she did ….

All I say LOVE has to feel this beautiful!!! Blessed are the ones who feel it atleast once in a lifetime :)

  29. That was an amazing chapter! It was like poetry in motion – the way you so easily blend in the song with the story. She was singing for him and all the feelings that she was trying to curb, just came flowing out in the song – so beautiful!

  31. I have read this chapter more than 10 times since it arrived and I have been humming the song ‘Pyaar Hua…’ ever since. I have also imagined a 100 possible scenarios for the next time Arnav and Khushi come face to face.

    Kya bolun ab?

    1. Right from the chapter’s name to the song ‘Pyaar Hua…’ (which by the way, I had never heard before),
From Khushi to Tripti to Arjun to AV sir.
I have successfully fallen in love with everything about this story and how!

Seriously, Meera. How did you manage to find such a perfect song for this chapter…this story? The river and ocean connect, had you planned this all along? I don’t think any song could have done justice to their story as much as this one did. What a beautiful song! I wish I’d heard it earlier.

And when their eyes met, I was a dead woman. Leave Arnav or Khushi, even I felt the deep connection there, as a third person.
The way she realised the depth of her feelings, and the way she knew her destiny was then sealed with him. The realisation that it isn’t just a stupid crush now, that she has fallen in love…my heart sang with her.
Coupled with the song’s echoing through the hall, and AV-Sir having eyes only for her, the applause that followed, the way her eyes searched for him – you created the perfectly dreamy atmosphere there. I forgot everything else.
      This line:
“..she didn’t want the sane side of her to win. She wanted to believe in the flimsy net of gold that had spun itself around her.”
That is how I feel today. The way you write Meera, it makes you want to fall in love…makes you want to believe in the emotion with all your heart. I had missed feeling like that all those months when you were on your break. I don’t know about others here, but for me only your stories make me feel that way. A part of me comes alive when I read your stories full of hope and love. Thank you. :)

The next 10 days are going to be the most difficult. :) I wish your life decides to end the torture and settle down for you. Will be waiting…

I snuck in reading this between running to find a blazer, forgetting my skirt at home, and trying to grab dinner before a performance- not unlike Khushi herself, I was also rather queasy. :D

Your writing leaves me with the most pleasant satisfaction, despite being impatient for more. That pang that Arjun feels, I have felt all too often- it was so relatable. I love your choice in songs- between you setting the scene with your words, building this… *feeling* for us… It becomes so 3D.

The songs which were suggested by Arjun….I was thinking please she should not sing all this…sing something more meaningful and a romantic song….and you heard me dear. I love this movie and the songs. It was a perfect song for her to sing. But what happened to our AV sir. I hope that AV realizes that Khushi likes him instead of Arjun. But I doubt he will think positively. 41. Wow! That was wonderful!
I really loved the idea of the whole iss dewane ladke ko performance they were going to put up. It would have been so hilarious and so much fun. However, I understand Khushi’s nervousness and especially after that spell-binding performance, I’m glad she chose to do ’pyaar hua’.
Of course, it had to be Arjun and Trip’s idea…great minds think alike and all. ;D
One thing that bothered me a little.. that moment between Arjun and Khushi.. where did that come from!? Arjun had/has a crush on Kavi?? Ouch. Not because he’s not good enough. Gosh, he’s awesome. Only because, if he indeed likes her still, he’s going to be heartbroken. That would be cruel *sob sob* Although, you wrote it so well…the flicker in his eyes…her consciousness of it and then, the denial. I could so relate to that…
The highlight of the update, however, was…that performance. It’s magic, all over again, Mer. Your words just weave that magic.
“All her doubts and misgivings fell away as the keyboard took over and played the piece of music that lilted through the sound of a sitar and rose to a crescendo merging into the sound of a hundred violins and the echoes of morning mist across the Himalayas thrumming in the vibrations that she felt in her heart.”
“Her eyes flew open and found the deep coal ones she had been avoiding for so long. And suddenly words that had never meant anything more than a song that showcased her untrained talent, took a life of their own.”
“She would find out eventually that the line had sealed her fate in that moment not just as mirror of her name but his too.” Wow! I’m spellbound by your storytelling.
I could totally imagine the dream-like quality of those few minutes, when Khushi was singing. It was so…soulful. As if she poured all she had, all she felt into those words… Arjun said it right… she sounded so inspired!
If THAT didn’t reach out to AV, he’s a moron. I’d like to go knock some sense into him. :P *kidding* I’m sure he was in that moment with her. Whether he ran because he was overwhelmed or because someone came and called him or something, remains to be seen. I think the latter is more likely. He doesn’t seem the cowardly kinds. But then again, all we know of him so far is through Khushi’s eyes… Wonder if we’ll get his POV sometime. Maybe, in the next book, directly? Once he’s introduced in the present, perhaps.
Anyway, I love that song. It’s beautiful and it was just perfect for the situation. I love your choice of songs. And the Bollywood references! The joy and nostalgia it brings is so heart-warming. :)

The song that came to my mind was..Are re are from Dil toh pagal hai…
“Hum Mein Tum Mein Kuch To Hai, Kuch Nahin Hai Kya
Aur Kuch Ho Jaaye To, Kuch Yakin Hai Kya
Dekh Lo Yeh Dil Jahaan Tha, Yeh Wahin Hai Kya
Are Re Are Yeh Kya Hua, Maine Na Yeh Jaana
Are Re Are Ban Jaaye Na, Kahin Koi Afsaana” ;) :D

    1. One more thing… Are we going to have a cast for the characters? Or is it left to our imagination?
I asked because earlier I didn’t really have a face in mind for Arjun, but when I was reading this chapter, suddenly my mind conjured up the image of Mohit Sehgal and I thought, hmm…he could be Arjun… the playfulness, teasing, calling Kavi chashmish kind of fits him.
You probably have a different image of him… some other actor, or perhaps someone in real life. But just thought I’d ask anyway.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Oh, Mohit Sehgal is a pretty good choice. I never thought of it. :D

Somehow I always get Karan Goddwani’s face when I try to picture Arjun. The guy who played NK in the show? Just all the drama he does…the hindi songs…. :)

Meera if you’re reading this, (of course you are!) don’t you think would be a good idea if you could let us know what faces you have in mind for these characters? Like Tripti! I’d love to know who have you imagined her as.

        Liked by 2 people

        1. :)
Yeah, Karan Goddwani is also fitting, I suppose.
I didn’t give it much thought actually. Mohit’s face just randomly came to mind while reading about Arjun. It could be because he called Kavi chashmish maybe.

Meera, the way you’ve imbued such delicate feeling into the song pyar hua is breathtaking. Elevating it to a whole new level. Each word holding so much significance. That sense of chalakti khushi surrounding me as I read.
In a way I’m glad AV sir went away. I don’t want an audience to be there when he speaks to her. Just those two with the flutter of pyaar … haayee

  44. tripti is one cute sister whom everybody would wish to have! she enters like a typical teenager singing merrily but the moment she sees her sisters bruise she is concerned and back to her protective avtar! she thinks arjun is handsome, though its too early to say but did she had a crush on him?

ganga yamuna sisters! so arjun likes khushi maybe from schooldays n khushi felt it too, but her inferiority complex wont let her beleive that people like arjun or arnav can feel something for her. only future would tell!

she agrees with arjun and is whole panicked up the next moment. even arjun becomes a little nervous but he manages everything about changing the song at the last moment.

such a beautiful song! describing the innocent joy of a girl in love. i had seen the movie when i was little, dont remember it much but i loved it at that time. the way u have described khushis thoughts simultaneously with the lyrics, is just fabulous! khushi felt something change in arnavs eyes too. he disappeared! maybe because all this time he was also thinking that arjun n khushi were together but now he realised that she had something for him.

i wish that i could read arnavs version at the moment but i know that u would bring that out at the right time just like in emerald isle. so till then would wait patiently!

Tripti is so much fun and not to forget filmy. I like that about her. So did Arjun really like Khushi during their school days? That would be interesting but Khushi is now falling for Arnav who is sweet and all but still they are not friends as such. Where did he go? I was waiting for them to have a conversation.

Can’t wait to find out why AV-sir had to leave. So far AV-sir has been casual and friendly with Khushi, while she has struggled incessantly to keep her emotions in check. Did the song tug at his heartstrings? Well…we know so little about his character…we don’t even know if he is single! I can very well relate to Khushi’s state of mind. Sometimes you cannot stop the heart from craving what it wants. Khushi is insecure about her physical appearance and hence constantly tries to curb her burgeoning feelings for AV-Sir. Can’t blame her….a college heart-throb like AV-Sir rarely falls for an overweight, shy, bespectacled girl. When someone is in that phase of their lives, he/she often might not have the maturity to look beyond appearances. Even if he/she develops an attraction towards an unconventional candidate, that person might not have the courage to act on it out of fear of public ridicule. Ideally, people should not care for appearances and I hope Arnav does not either. So what if Khushi is not a traditional beauty with a thin waist and long lustrous hair. She is a beautiful person and I’m happy that at least Arjun recognizes that. Btw, Arjun is a total sweetheart! :)
